How Yoga Helps Reduce Stress, Anxiety & Burnout in Modern Life: My Approach as a Yoga & Wellness Coach

A few years ago, when I decided to create Unalome Yoga & Wellness, I knew I didn’t want it to be just another yoga studio.

I didn’t want to create a space where people felt they had to be flexible enough, fit enough, young enough, or experienced enough to belong. I wanted to create a space where everyone felt welcome, a space built with intention, compassion, and the belief that wellness should be accessible to all.

Today, one of the things I hear most often from students is that they feel safe here. They don’t feel judged. They don’t feel like they have to perform. They can simply show up as they are.

And in many ways, I believe that feeling of safety is where true wellness begins.

Stress Is More Than a Mental Problem

When most people think about stress, they think about a busy mind.

But as a yoga teacher, I’ve seen how stress shows up in the body just as much as it shows up in our thoughts.

It shows up as tight shoulders, poor posture, restless sleep, low energy, digestive discomfort, headaches, anxiety, irritability, and a constant feeling of being “on.”

Many of us spend our days moving from one responsibility to another without giving the nervous system an opportunity to slow down and recover.

Over time, the body begins to operate in a constant state of fight-or-flight. When this happens, everything from recovery and digestion to sleep and emotional balance can be affected.

This is why at Unalome, we don’t view wellness as simply a physical practice. We view it as caring for the body, mind, breath, emotions, and nervous system together.

Yoga Is More Than Stretching

One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter is that yoga is only for flexible people.

Some people believe yoga is too slow. Others believe it’s only for women. Many assume they need to become flexible before they can start.

In reality, yoga is for the person who feels stiff after years of sitting at a desk. It’s for the busy professional carrying stress in their body. It’s for the parent who struggles to find time for themselves. It’s for the person who simply wants to feel better.

I’ve worked with students in their 20s and students in their 60s. I’ve seen people arrive believing they “can’t do yoga” only to discover that what they needed wasn’t flexibility, it was awareness, mobility, breath, and a way to reconnect with themselves.

Yoga is not about touching your toes. It’s about understanding your body and learning how to support it through different phases of life.

Why Our Weekly Schedule Is Designed Differently

At Unalome, our weekly classes follow a rhythm that mirrors what the body often needs throughout the week.

Mondays and Tuesdays are dedicated to Vinyasa Flow. At the beginning of the week, most people benefit from movement that energizes them, builds strength, and helps release accumulated stress through breath-led movement.

By Wednesday and Thursday, we shift into Hatha Detox practices. These sessions include twists, backbends, and mindful breathwork that encourage release, openness, and balance.

By Friday, many people are physically and mentally tired from the demands of the week. Instead of pushing harder, we slow down.

Our Yin Yoga sessions focus on deep rest, fascia release, relaxation, and nervous system regulation. This is often where students discover how much tension they have been carrying, not just physically, but emotionally as well.

For me, wellness isn’t about doing more. It’s about understanding what the body needs and responding with awareness.

The Changes I See in Students

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is witnessing the transformation that happens when people practice consistently.

Most students initially notice physical changes. Their posture improves. Their body feels stronger and more mobile. They move with greater ease.

But over time, something deeper begins to shift.

They sleep better.

Their anxiety levels reduce.

They feel calmer during challenging situations.

Their energy becomes more balanced.

They become more aware of their thoughts, emotions, and patterns.

Many students tell me that yoga eventually becomes a part of their routine that they genuinely miss when they skip it, not because they feel obligated to do it, but because of how it makes them feel.

Wellness Is More Than What Happens on the Mat

For me personally, wellness has never been limited to physical exercise.

Wellness is how you respond when life doesn’t go according to plan.

It’s your ability to stay grounded during uncertainty.

It’s learning to accept what you cannot control while continuing to show up for what matters.

It’s creating space between yourself and the constant chatter of the mind.

Much of what I’ve learned about wellness has come not only through yoga postures, but through meditation, journaling, breathwork, self-reflection, and learning to surrender when needed.

The physical practice is important. But it is only one piece of a much larger journey.

A Gentle Invitation

If you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, disconnected, or simply looking for a more balanced approach to wellness, know that you don’t need to be flexible, experienced, or “good at yoga” to begin.

You simply need to start.

At Unalome Yoga & Wellness in Vasant Kunj, we offer Vinyasa Yoga, Hatha Detox, Yin Yoga, Pranayama, Meditation, Sound Healing, Pilates, Dance Fitness, and wellness workshops designed to support the body, mind, and nervous system.

Whether you’re stepping onto the mat for the first time or returning to your practice after years away, there is space for you here.

Because wellness isn’t about becoming someone else.

It’s about coming home to yourself.
